Rockdale County Mother Finds Aid with Georgia Dream

Our Georgia Dream program provides down payment assistance for first-time home buyers. In our Keys to Success series, we’ve asked residents from all across Georgia to share how they were able to accomplish their goal of securing the keys to their success and becoming homeowners!

Nevelyn Oglesby lived in Conyers, Rockdale County, for nearly six years when she had heard about Georgia Dream. At the time, she was renting a house but could not afford to save enough for a down payment. With her daughters in their first year of middle and high school, the family was faced with significant financial needs.

At Berean Christian Church in DeKalb County, Oglesby learned about the Georgia Department of Community Affairs and how the Georgia Dream program could provide significant aid for her in owning her own home.

By applying, she received down payment assistance which also covered her closing fees. As of June 1, 2021, individuals can receive a standard down payment of $7,500 while $10,000 is offered to those who fall under PEN or CHOICE.

“It means a stable environment to raise my family. It means hope and a place to call home,” Oglesby said when asked what the program meant to her. “It is my American dream.”

She also adds that the process was much easier to go through (than reading on paper) and a relief for her family. For others who want to know more about DCA and the Georgia Dream program, Oglesby advises to believe in the process and to have patience.
