PlanFirst Success Story: Southwell Medical Project

DCA’s PlanFirst program recognizes and rewards Georgia communities that clearly demonstrate an established pattern of successfully implementing their Local Comprehensive Plan. Our PlanFirst “Success Story” series highlights these cities and counties by sharing their incredible achievements. You can view all of the communities on our Story Map

The City of Adel’s 2015 comprehensive plan included an opportunity to “maintain the quality of the existing hospital system,” which resulted in the retention of a hospital facility for the community while also created a new model for rural healthcare.

With the Southwell Medical Project, the hospital opened its new, state-of-the-art facility on October 1, 2019, and the replacement facility is a destination facility for specialty services. The facility saved 250 jobs and allowed for the addition of approximately 100 positions. In addition, it spurred development along the Exit 37 interchange where the hospital is located.

The project is supported by the community in that Cook County voted to invest $5 million into the project, and the City of Adel voted to invest $4 million over 30 years.
