PlanFirst Success Story: Oconee County

DCA’s PlanFirst program recognizes and rewards Georgia communities that clearly demonstrate an established pattern of successfully implementing their Local Comprehensive Plan. Our PlanFirst “Success Story” series highlights these cities and counties by sharing their incredible achievements. You can view all of the communities on our Story Map.

Phase 1 of Oconee Veterans Park was completed in 2018. This project included three new multi-purpose fields with 320-foot fences, a concession and restroom building, more than 200 parking spaces, and a walkway.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the $2.5 million field expansion at Veterans Park on Oct. 4, 2018. Residents demonstrated their support of the project by approving funding for Park and Recreation facilities in the 2015 SPLOST, and completion of multi-purpose fields at Oconee Veterans Park was made a top priority based on community feedback.

This project has successfully increased access to outdoor amenities for the community and increased participation in Parks and Recreation programming. Notably, the average Parks and Recreation program enrollment for the months of July-December were up by 221 enrollments per month in 2019 compared with the same period in 2018. In addition, the Oconee County Parks & Recreation Department was named a “Better Sports for Kids Quality Program Provider” for 2018/2019 by the National Alliance for Youth Sports.

This project shows the county’s successful implementation of its short-term work program for more than 10 years, culminating with the achievement of this long-term goal. This achievement represents the implementation of community desires as expressed during public input sessions and has led to the completion of park facilities that residents enjoy daily.
