PlanFirst Success Story: Cornelia Municipal Complex

For the City of Cornelia, the construction and completion of a new municipal complex addressed several needs within the community and the comprehensive plan. As years went by, the need for the project only became more apparent. 

Construction began in April 2019, and the Municipal Complex was completed in July 2020 as well as the Fire Station the following December. The project has made city services more functional and efficient by creating needed meeting space, providing new parking, and adding new sidewalks and streetscapes for connectivity to encourage alternative transportation. 

In addition, overall safety was increased, and Insurance Services Office (ISO) for residents was lowered. A blighted area of downtown was revitalized, drainage in a flood-prone area was improved, and the city’s infrastructure and aesthetics saw enhancements. 

With the combining of all departments under one roof, the community has been supportive and praised the efficiency and convenience of one building. This has led to the request to use the meeting space for civic club, community engagement, and ancillary meetings. 

As private investment is now catalyzed, the project achieved several of the goals listed throughout the Comprehensive Plan and improved the overall quality of the downtown.
