PlanFirst Success Story: City of Tifton

DCA’s PlanFirst program recognizes and rewards Georgia communities that clearly demonstrate an established pattern of successfully implementing their Local Comprehensive Plan. Our PlanFirst “Success Story” series highlights these cities and counties by sharing their incredible achievements. You can view all of the communities on our Story Map.

Based on the outcome of the needs assessed in Tifton’s Comprehensive Plan and Downtown Connectivity Plan, its Downtown Development Authority (DDA) in 2019 began researching ideas to create visually identifiable crosswalks in downtown.

Those plans became a reality in July 2019 as the first phase of improving the crosswalks in downtown Tifton began. This area is unique in that it has two state routes that run through the bustling area, and pedestrian safety is a major concern.

These new crosswalks feature a herringbone brick pattern like the design aesthetic of the sidewalks in downtown and can act as traffic-calming devices to alert the driver that they are approaching a pedestrian crosswalk. This project perfectly merged the city officials’ plan to increase connectivity and safety while maintaining the downtown appeal.

The second phase of the crosswalk installation was completed in January 2020 with a total of 16 installed. This project was funded in part by a USDA grant and capital improvement funds provided by the Tifton DDA. This project was supported by local leadership and is a success because it addressed the necessary safety concerns while maintaining downtown aesthetics.
