PlanFirst Success Story: City of Chamblee
DCA’s PlanFirst program recognizes and rewards Georgia communities that clearly demonstrate an established pattern of successfully implementing their Local Comprehensive Plan. Our PlanFirst “Success Story” series highlights these cities and counties by sharing their incredible achievements. You can view all of the communities on our Story Map.
In 2014, Chamblee began a multi-year journey to enhance its local parks. The “City on a Right Track” initiative was an addendum to Chamblee’s 2014-2019 Local Comprehensive Plan which effectively enhanced and prioritized the original recommendations in the Parks Master Plan.
Local officials were focused on best practices in areas of development patterns, community, and livability. The goal was to improve the appearance of and increase greenspace (parkland) parts of the community as well as provide more community gathering spaces.
Keswick Park and International Village Park were two specific areas where improvements were needed, such as replacing unsafe playground equipment and restroom access. From 2018-2019, these recommendations were put into action.
Visitors to Keswick Park can utilize EarthCraft Certified restrooms, and International Village Park features new furnishings and a new community garden. Both parks also have new ADA-accessible playground equipment.
In 2020, the city was able to cite these park improvements into its current comprehensive plan achievements and make pending work items current goals. The new plan prioritizes funding for key recommendations for local parks. According to city officials, “The adoption of the Parks Plan is a success that has improved quality of life, accessibility, and sustainability priorities sought in the [Comprehensive] Plan vision.”
